Jimmies escape deep hole in third straight win By Red Williams Freelance Sportswriter ELKHART- Many had probably given up any chance for victory Tuesday night (11.11.25) in high school girls basketball when the Jimtown Jimmies went scoreless in the first quarter. Visiting Bethany Christian had the upper hand, streaking to a 12-0 lead. But the Girls of Baugo never called “uncle” and fought back to defeat the Bruins, 33-30, in overtime. “We came out with an intense defense after the half, and didn’t give up,” said Jimmy Coach Shaunte Williams.”These kids believe in each other and in themselves.” The Jimmies now are 3-0, while Bethany falls to 0-2. Jimtown opens play in the Indiana Northern State Conference on Thursday against visiting LaVille. The Bruins face Elkhart Christian Academy at home on Friday. [NOTE: The Jimtown-LaVille contest was originally scheduled for Friday, but switched to Thursday, because the Lancers football team is still in the state playoffs.] It was an exciting finish for Jimmy fans (a good crowd was on hand), as they watched their team overcome an eight-point deficit in the fourth period: Freshman shooting guard Jordyn Williams cashed in on a three-pointer at 4:30 to trim BC’s lead to 30-25. A minute later, Lily Gaugler nailed an eight-foot floater along the baseline, cutting it to 30-27. Williams rang the bell again with a trey from the side to tie the score at 1:41. “It was their intense defense that made the difference,” explained Bethany coach Krysten Parson. “I was happy for our improvement. We can learn from this.” That Jimmy defense held the Bruins scoreless in the OT. Kiera Jackson put the Jimmies ahead with a lay-in on a nice feed from Kamryn Williams at the 2:13 mark. Meanwhile Bethany was forced to foul, finally putting Jimtown at the free-throw line. Jordyn Williams finished with a free shot at :00.8. Coach Williams credited Brianna Curtis with the spark that ignited Jimtown’s comeback. She came off the bench to hit a three at 4:12 in the second quarter, followed by a lay-up 17 seconds later on an assist from Gaugler. Jordyn Williams and Jackson led the Jimmies’ attack with 10 points each. Ellie Morris had the same for the Bruins. Scoring: Bethany Chr 12 9 5 4 0 30 Jimtown 0 14 8 8 3 33 Officials: Ron Day (Plymouth), Chris Cortier (Mishawaka), Bryan Lochmondy (LaPorte)
