Varsity vs Mishawaka Marian High School (6 - 9) Loss Jimmies see lead evaporate, but can’t find an answer By Red Williams Freelance Sportswriter ELKHART – Eating crow is not very appetizing. Jimtown High School’s baseball squad built a first-inning 3-0 lead over visiting Mishawaka Martian, but surrendered a five-spot the next inning to the Knights and never regained its footing in losing, 9-6. A good crowd was on hand for the non-conference contest Monday (4.28.25) in 78-degree sunshine at Booster Field, but a swirling wind caused some problems. A wind-blown drive off the bat of the Jimmies’ Conner Christman couldn’t be corralled in right field for a two-base error. And that led off the first inning for the Boys of Baugo. That was followed by a sharp single to left by Ty Zartman and a bunt single by Dalton Cook loaded the bases. Broderick Kaler scored Christman with a sacrifice fly deep to center, and Mason Armstrong plated Zartman with a single thru the infield to left. Then Cook stole second and came in to score on a single off the bat of Cole Dutton. But the Knights (5-6) came roaring back in an ugly scene: Two Jimmy errors, two walks and a hit-batter contributed to the onslaught, as Marian scored five without benefit of a hit. “We didn’t play up to our potential,” said Jimmy Coach Brandon Squibb. “They took advantage of everything we offered.” He also noted his pitching staff has three or four sore arms. The Jimmies, now 7-3, hope to rebound Tuesday (4.29.25) in a visit to tough NorthWood. Armstrong will be on the bump. Marian’s victory was led by pitcher Cole Briones (2-2), a southpaw, who labored away 6.7 innings, yielding eight hits, striking out just one. He had a knack of getting the Jimmies to hit a flock of balls into the air (13 outs recorded in that manner). Marian coach Joe Turnock said, “He pitched well, but began to tire at the end.” Score by innings: Marian 0 5 2 0 0 2 0 - 9 5 2 Jimtown 3 0 0 1 0 0 2 - 6 10 3 Umpires: Braxton Metcalf, Robert Smith
